Trend setter, entertainer and lyrically-solid are just some of the words used to describe this dynamic exponent of the arts. With his signature phrase ‘plug-in to all’, Shane Atkinson who carries the sobriquet ‘Stiffy’ has certainly plugged his name and body of work into the cultural landscape of Barbados.
Known for his comedic inflection and hardcore approach to lyrical construction, Stiffy has easily won the hearts of adoring fans since his debut in 2011 at the National Cultural Foundation’s Crop Over Cavalcade. His first ‘hit’ single ‘Carr My Sheep in Town’ earned him a place in the much respected Bacchanal Time Calypso Tent.
Crop Over 2014 brought even more recognition to this chart topping artiste with his hit song ‘Ride It’ which could be heard pounding in any fete or party for the three month long Crop Over Festival. As the word spread about his outstanding performances, crowd moving antics and biting punch lines, Stiffy soon found favor at various local events in 2014-2015. These include the stages of Soca on De Hill, Cohobbolopot, Arthur Guinness Concert, Party Monarch Finals, and Digicel Reggae Beach Party are just to name a few events. However, it was not until 2014 that this break-through artiste earned his international stamp of approval after being booked as the featured artiste for the ‘Bajan Invasion-The Do Over’ show in Toronto, Canada. With the show being such a huge success and having a great crowd response, Stiffy returned to Toronto, Canada in 2015 to perform at the ever so popular annual ‘Win Fete.’
For Crop Over 2015, Stiffy jumped started the Carnival Season with what turned out to be three major hit songs in that of ‘Garden - Maintenance Man’, ‘Squat’ and ‘Bus Crawl’ (the latter being a collaboration with Jagwa which placed Second in the Stag Jam Tune Competition). It was with these songs that he graced the stages of all major events during the season including performances at the Season Opening LIME/Hott 95.3FM Mega Cavalcade in May, the One Caribbean Relief Concert in October (a fund raising concert in aid of the hurricane ravaged island of Dominica) as well as the Barbados Food & Wine and Rum Festival in November.
Stiffy is not only a musical genius in the genre of soca but he has also experimented with his prowess for lyrical mastery in dancehall and reggae
earning him a place as one of the most respected in the latter. This was further evident during Crop Over 2016 with him winning the Inaugural Bashment Soca Competition as well as placing Second in the Road March Tune of the Crop Competition with the infectious tune ‘Tek off Something’. In additional to performing on all national and private stages during the festival, he was also invited to perform alongside and share the stage with Machal Montano at his One Love Concert; an experience that surpassed even his wildest dreams. The confidence in him as an artist saw him becoming the brand ambassador for Digicel (Telecommunications) and Mt Gay Black Barrel (Barbados leading rum producer) for the 2016/2017 period. With even the Central Bank of Barbados utilizing his services for their Ad promotion of their new insight.bb magazine.
Stiffy remains focused on his goal and aspiration to becoming one of the leading artistes in Barbados and the region. A very humble and approachable personality has earned him the respect among his peers and the general population. He continues to expand his repertoire and credits the following studios for their assistance with his arsenal of songs. Audio Lab Studios, Platta Studios, Link International, Monstapiece and Quantum Productions just to name a few.
Stiffy hopes to take the world by storm in the coming future and is looking forward to a long and successful career in the entertainment industry.
